BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 2, 2008)-Perhaps the Morgan State women's basketball team was looking past the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) and to Monday evening's anticipated match-up with defending MEAC Tournament champion, Delaware State, which upended the Lady Bears in the title game a year ago.
Or maybe it was just the hot shooting of visiting UMES, which shot 54 percent (32-of-59) from the field, including 62 percent (13-of-21) for the game. Morgan State, which had 15 more shot attempts than UMES, finished the game 32-of-74 (43 percent) and 3-for-18 (17 percent) from three-point range.
Nonetheless, as the final horn sounded, it was the Lady Hawks of UMES celebrating a 95-80 victory over Morgan State, thus ending the Lady Bears' 4-0 start at home this season and seven-game home winning streak dating back to last season.
Tiffany Reid finished with a game-high 24 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the three-point arc and April McBride also tallied a double-double by adding 20 points and a game-high 19 rebounds to lead UMES (11-8, 5-3 MEAC) to its fourth straight win and end a three-game losing slide to the Lady Bears, following its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.
The overall performance by the Lady Hawks ruined career days for two Lady Bears. Morgan State, which fell to 11-8, 5-3 in the MEAC, was led by Shalane Price, who scored a career-high 20 points and Corin Adams added 20 points. Brittany Dodson chipped in with a career-high 19 points in a losing effort.
Behind the help of McBride and Reid on the boards, UMES outrebounded Morgan State, 48-32. The Lady Bears held a 14-6 steals advantage with Adams recording a game-high five thefts and Price adding three.
Morgan State will take on Delaware State on Monday, Feb. 4, in the second game of its season-long four-game homestand. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The Lady Hornets were 60-57 losers earlier today at Coppin State.
