With the league's head coaches and sports information directors ranking them finishing in 4th place, in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll, the Morgan State Softball team comes out of the dugout this season with something greater in mind, a MEAC Championship. With all nine starters returning to the plate and only two new additions, Head Coach Jeff Bozier realizes that the small number may be a challenge but not up against the quality of these ladies.
"There's not a whole lot of options as far as depth but as far as these girls and their quality….put them up against anyone…… [their] very versatile they can play different positions," says Bozier.
The two new additions are welcomed aboard, pitcher Megan Johnson, from Windsor, Maryland and catcher Tamara Griffin, from Portsmouth, Virginia, but not without a rookie show, the washing of the teams uniform, and the responsibility of the equipment. But besides that, senior Karlana Ingram says she welcomes the freshmen by joking with them to break the ice. Others agree that due to the lack of participants there's no room to be mean. "We need players," giggles junior Megan Jimenez, "so we don't want to push anybody away."
Its not only the quality that these ladies posses that makes them good, it's the close-knit bond that allows them to know not only one another, but how each other plays the game. Jimenez and senior Dominisha Britton both express that it is the love of the game and the team are the best things of all.
"This is a family, this is rare, you don't find anything like this anywhere," states Ingram, who also splits time in the infield, when not on the mound.
Since the quality of these ladies is outstanding and the teamness is there, the coaching staff of the Morgan State softball team include Head Coach Jeff Bozier, Assistant Coach Rodney Mays, and Assistant Coach Aubrey Love, who will sit back and allow these ladies to do what they do.
If you thought that the football team was the only team pulling two-a-days, think again; these ladies of the softball team uphold a vigorous practice schedule. With a five day regular practice schedule, practice is also carried out on the weekends.
"Pretty much everyday their doing something," says Assistant Coach Mays. "Weightlifting, training and then they do conditioning training on often days. Some days we'll have weightlifting and practice in the evening and then some days we'll do cardio and practice in the evenings."
The ladies opened their season with a 3-1 record, defeating MEACs South Division rival South Carolina State in a non-conference doubleheader, winning 17-7 and 7-4 and Winston-Salem State where they earned a split, losing the first game seven to one, before winning the second, six to three. The softball team will make their first home appearance on March 11 against Mount St. Mary's in a non-conference doubleheader at Randazzo Park.
