Hail Morganites! And welcome to another hard hitting edition of the Spokesman student publication. As the semester continues to rapidly draw to a close, we come up on yet another tradition, and really the capstone of the spring semester at Morgan, second to commencement: our annual "I Love Morgan" Day. "I Love Morgan" Day will be held in Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University on Friday, April 25, 2008 from 10am to 4pm. This is a day filled with not just orange and blue paraphernalia, face painting, organizational booths, laughter, school spirit and loads of fun; it is also a day for the new officers of all of the school's organizations for the next school year to be inaugurated and for us to all express to our future Alma Mater just how much we appreciate, thank God for and love it so. And that's what this issue and this time and season is all about. Expressing our gratitude and love for Morgan State University, and how much it means to us. As I sat down in front of my laptop, I took a moment to reflect on how I really feel about my school and future Alma Mater and I came up with the following thoughts that I would like to share with you all. I came to Morgan in the fall semester of last year after being out of school for almost eight years. Morgan, believe it or not, was actually my first choice of college. And I believe that the same reasons why I chose to come to Morgan almost a year ago are the same reasons why (with maybe a few added or taken away) that I love and cherish Morgan so dearly today. For the sake of time and brevity I'll just name a few of those reasons. I love Morgan State University first and foremost because the majority of professors and lower-level staff members here treat you as not just a number, but a real person, with dreams, aspirations and goals. And student to student, despite our different backgrounds, races and cultures, we have more of a family-like atmosphere in the close knit circle of Morgan then a lot of other institutions of higher learning I've seen. I feel more welcomed and at home here then I do in my own neighborhood in Northeast Baltimore and sometimes even in my own family. Now that's saying something. I love Morgan for the opportunities it gives to students like me, with different backgrounds, cultures and obstacles to overcome. Morgan gives a lot of people a chance to succeed that most colleges wouldn't even give the time of day to. I love Morgan for its deeply rooted history in Christianity and its foundation, solidified by its faith in God. I love Morgan State for the spirit of Excellency that it attempts to put forth in everything that it does, for its great history and for having some of the greatest instructors, lecturers and professors in the country. I also love Morgan for its awesome choir, heralded academic programs, new facilities, endless opportunities and dare I say some of the finest "sistas" in Baltimore City (smile). But most importantly, I love Morgan for each and every one of you. Because without you, Morgan State University wouldn't exist. I leave you with this thought and challenge for this week… As you go about your week and participate in the events surrounding "I Love Morgan" Week, stop to take a moment in some quiet area on campus, and as you gaze out across the campus begin to ask yourself the question, "Why do I love Morgan State?" And as you reflect on that, turn your face toward heaven, look towards "the hills from which cometh your help", thank God and give God crazy praise for a place like Morgan State University. Morgan, I do love thee, and I always will. I thank God for you always. Until next week Morganites, be blessed and be encouraged! The best is yet to come!
